Remi Cadene, a former engineer at Tesla, has announced plans to develop an AI robot named "Northstar" aimed at automating industrial processes in Europe, where the working-age population is declining. Cadene revealed the robot at the Machina Summit in Paris, stating that it will be utilized in manufacturing plants, logistics warehouses, and homes.
The Northstar robot is designed to weigh 40 kilograms (88 pounds) to ensure safe interaction with humans and will employ real-time learning technology to acquire skills by observing demonstrations. Cadene compared the robot's learning process to that of a child learning to tie shoelaces.
Cadene is the CEO and co-founder of UMA, a Paris-based startup focused on developing general-purpose AI and humanoid robots. The company plans to demonstrate a proof of concept by the end of the year and is currently in discussions with 50 potential customers regarding applications for the robot. The initiative comes as European startups, such as Genesis in France and Neura Robotics in Germany, are also investing in robotic technologies to address the challenges posed by an aging population and a shrinking workforce.
