U.S. forces executed a series of strikes against Iran on July 7, targeting over 80 locations, including more than 60 small boats operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. This action was taken in response to Iran's attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM reported that the strikes aimed to degrade Iran's capabilities to threaten international shipping in the region. The military response follows a pattern of Iranian attacks and U.S. retaliatory actions since a ceasefire was announced by former President Donald Trump on April 7.
In addition to the military strikes, the U.S. Treasury Department revoked temporary sanctions waivers that allowed Iran to export oil, ending a 60-day license issued on June 21. The strikes occurred after Iranian attacks on a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker and a Saudi crude oil tanker.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime corridor, with approximately 20% of the world's oil passing through it. The recent attacks and military responses come amid ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Iran concerning a broader agreement, including Iran's nuclear program, with a deadline set for mid-August.
