The Texas Democratic Party has called for an independent investigation into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer who fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican man, in Houston. The incident occurred on Tuesday when Araujo allegedly rammed his vehicle into the officer, who then fired in self-defense. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Araujo did not comply with commands during a traffic stop before the incident.
The DHS Office of Inspector General is currently investigating the shooting, but Texas Democrats have expressed concerns regarding the fairness of the investigation under the Trump administration. Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder stated, "Nobody is defending violent criminals or suggesting that law enforcement should not protect themselves when they face a genuine threat," emphasizing the need for transparency in the investigation.
Calls for an independent investigation were reiterated by Representative Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) and Araujo's family during a press conference. Garcia stated, "We are demanding a transparent and independent investigation and ICE out of our neighborhoods now. We cannot allow the facts and evidence to be buried."
Araujo, a construction worker, was driving a van at the time of the incident, and three of his co-workers were arrested by ICE. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, expressed his grief, stating that his father deserved to live a quiet life and criticized the portrayal of his father in the media. Araujo was taken to a hospital where he later died from gunshot wounds. The FBI's field office in Houston is investigating the incident, specifically regarding the alleged assault on a federal officer, while the Houston Police Department is not involved in the investigation.
