Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is facing criticism from some Democrats for his previous support of Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate nominee in Maine, who has recently suspended his campaign following sexual assault allegations. Critics argue that Sanders' endorsement contributed to the rise of a candidate perceived as flawed in a crucial race.
The criticism intensified this week, particularly after Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) publicly rebuked Sanders, stating that he bears significant responsibility for Platner's candidacy. Fetterman called for Sanders to apologize to Maine voters and those who supported Platner's campaign, which he described as problematic.
Fetterman expressed concerns about Sanders' influence on the party's left wing, suggesting that it may not align with the broader electorate's preferences, especially in competitive races. Sanders had been one of Platner's earliest supporters but withdrew his endorsement after allegations surfaced from Jenny Racicot, who claimed that Platner assaulted her five years ago, which Platner has denied.
The Vermont senator's initial support for Platner came despite prior controversies, including a Nazi tattoo and inappropriate text messages. Democratic strategist Michael LaRosa criticized progressive leaders, including Sanders, for backing Platner despite early warnings, suggesting they owe an apology to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and the Senate Democrats' campaign arm.
This situation highlights an ongoing ideological divide within the Democratic Party, with concerns that leftist candidates may jeopardize the party's electoral success. Jim Kessler, a former Schumer staffer, described Sanders' support for Platner as a significant misjudgment, implying that Sanders prioritizes ideological battles over winning elections.
Former congressional candidate Joe Baldacci acknowledged the need for increased scrutiny of candidates in the future but emphasized that the ultimate responsibility lies with Platner himself. The Washington Examiner has reached out to both Sanders and Platner for comments.
