The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents involved in a fatal shooting in Houston were not wearing body cameras, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation. The incident, which resulted in the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican citizen allegedly in the country illegally, is under investigation by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, while local prosecutors are conducting a separate inquiry.
Araujo was shot on Tuesday after he reportedly attempted to ram an ICE officer with his vehicle. Following the incident, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called for a thorough investigation and the immediate release of video footage. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also demanded accountability and reiterated his support for abolishing ICE.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced intentions to pursue legal measures related to the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security referred inquiries about body cameras to ICE's previous statement, which indicated that Araujo had attempted to evade arrest and posed a threat to officers. Araujo was taken to a hospital after being shot, where he later died. The agency stated that it would provide updates as more information becomes available. Araujo's family has disputed ICE's account and has requested the release of any video evidence.
