California Governor Gavin Newsom stated he will support whichever candidates win the Democratic nomination as the party aims to regain control of the House of Representatives. His comments come as he positions himself as a pragmatic Democrat ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid, raising questions about balancing moderate and progressive support within the party.
Newsom expressed that he believes ideological diversity within the party is beneficial, stating, "I think it’s incredibly healthy" and dismissing concerns about ideological shifts. He referenced the influence of the Green Party in the late 1990s and early 2000s, noting that many of its priorities have been adopted by Democrats over time.
He plans to campaign for progressive Democrat Randy Villegas, who is challenging incumbent Rep. David Valadao in California's 22nd Congressional District. However, it remains uncertain whether Newsom's support will extend to candidates associated with more extreme factions of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Political strategist Tiffany Raspberry commented that Newsom's approach is a political gamble aimed at unifying the party ahead of the midterm elections while maintaining support from both moderate and progressive factions. She cautioned that the call for unity may not be reciprocated by the party's left wing, citing recent electoral outcomes in New York City as examples of potential challenges.
Another strategist, David McLaughlin, advised Newsom to focus on immediate political challenges rather than the 2028 election, emphasizing the importance of retaking the House and Senate to provide a legislative check on former President Donald Trump.
