James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the Texas Senate, acknowledged during a recent interview that some of his past statements, including his claim that God is non-binary, were provocative and may have missed the mark. In an interview with CBS News' Ed O'Keefe, Talarico addressed how Republicans have used his previous remarks as political attacks. He explained that his statement was meant to convey that God cannot be confined to human categories, referencing Galatians 3:28, which discusses unity in Christ beyond gender distinctions.
Talarico stated, "I am always going to stand up for Texans who are being picked on by the most powerful, most corrupt politicians in the country." He admitted to making mistakes in his statements but suggested that his opponent, Ken Paxton, was using these comments to distract from his own record. Talarico emphasized his legislative achievements, including passing over 60 bipartisan bills and working across party lines on issues such as property taxes and teacher pay.
When asked about another past statement regarding biological sex, Talarico clarified that he recognizes two sexes but acknowledges the existence of a small percentage of individuals with chromosomal variations who deserve respect. Republicans have characterized Talarico as too progressive for Texas, a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office in many years.
