Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) is reportedly considering a run for the Senate seat formerly held by Lindsey Graham, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 71. According to a report from Politico, Mace, who recently lost her gubernatorial bid, plans to explore the possibility of running for the seat this week. Sources indicate that she will begin polling for a potential campaign and has remaining funds in her federal campaign account from previous elections.
Under South Carolina law, a special election must be held by August 11 to select a replacement for Graham. He had recently won his primary with approximately 57% of the vote. Mace's chances may be uncertain, as she finished fifth in the gubernatorial primary and previously lost a Senate primary challenge to Graham in 2014.
While Mace has not publicly commented on her potential candidacy, she shared a tribute to Graham on social media, expressing her condolences and recognizing his contributions to South Carolina and the nation. Governor Henry McMaster (R-SC) is expected to appoint a temporary replacement for Graham until January 3.
