The Medical Examiner of Washington, D.C., released preliminary details on Sunday regarding the cause of death of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who passed away at the age of 71. According to a statement from Graham's office, the preliminary cause of death is attributed to "Aortic Dissection due to Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease." The findings are preliminary and subject to further forensic testing, including microscopic and toxicological analysis.
Arteriosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) is characterized by the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to serious health issues, including heart attacks and strokes. Aortic dissection, a tear in the aorta, is a life-threatening condition that can cause severe chest or back pain.
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were called to Graham's residence at 8:30 p.m. local time to assist with severe chest pains. Approximately 25 minutes later, they confirmed they were performing CPR on a man in his 70s who had suffered a cardiac arrest. Graham was transported to George Washington University Hospital around 9:30 p.m., where he was later pronounced dead.
President Donald Trump commented on Graham's passing and participated in a scheduled interview on "Meet the Press" in his place. Trump also announced that flags across the nation would be lowered in Graham's honor for one week.
