Representative Byron Donalds, a Republican from Florida, has dismissed calls to debate his rivals in the upcoming gubernatorial primary, citing his significant lead in the polls. Donalds stated, "I've been consistent," and noted that his opponents are polling in single digits while he maintains a lead of approximately 50%. He emphasized that there is no need for debates given his campaign's strong fundraising, which has exceeded $90 million.
Donalds, who is retiring from the House to run for governor, received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, which he believes has bolstered his support among voters. His opponents include Florida Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, former House Speaker Paul Renner, and investor James Fishback, who have participated in debates without Donalds. Fishback has criticized Donalds for not engaging in debates, arguing that voters deserve to see candidates face off. Fishback claims to have met with voters across all 67 counties in Florida and has held more events than Donalds in the past month.
The Florida primary election is scheduled for August 18, 2026, with Donalds projected to lead significantly over his competitors.
