Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stated on Wednesday that the SAVE America Act proposed by President Donald Trump will not pass. Schumer emphasized, "Mr. President, the SAVE Act ain’t passing. It ain’t passing in the Senate, it ain’t passing the Democrats, and it ain’t passing in the courts."
Trump is advocating for Republicans to support his election legislation, but Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) noted that Republicans do not have enough votes to pass the bill. Currently, Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate but require 60 votes to pass the SAVE America Act, meaning bipartisan support is necessary.
Schumer reiterated that Democrats oppose the legislation and will not provide the votes needed for its passage. Due to the inability to reach the 60-vote threshold, Trump and some GOP lawmakers are considering ending the filibuster rule to allow a simple majority for legislative passage. However, there is insufficient support within the Republican Party to abolish the filibuster, according to Thune.
Schumer advised Republicans to abandon efforts on the SAVE America Act, stating, "It’s been rejected over and over again." He urged them to focus on more productive work. Despite Trump's push for the SAVE America Act, House Republicans have included it in a $95 million reconciliation package alongside other legislative priorities. Schumer countered claims that Democrats are seeking a government shutdown, asserting that it is Republicans who are pursuing such an outcome to advance the SAVE America Act.
