Troy Jackson is campaigning for the Maine Democratic Senate nomination with a platform focused on anti-corporate populism. However, he has received endorsements from several current and former lobbyists, including Severin Beliveau, Ed Pineau, and Jennifer DeChant, who have ties to industries such as fossil fuels, tobacco, and pharmaceuticals.
Jackson, a former state Senate president and ally of Bernie Sanders, has distanced himself from Graham Platner, a previous candidate who withdrew amid sexual assault allegations. Jackson's campaign emphasizes a commitment to grassroots movements and addressing issues faced by working families, such as healthcare costs and housing. Despite this, his campaign did not comment on how the lobbying backgrounds of his endorsers may conflict with his anti-corporate stance.
The endorsements include Beliveau, known for lobbying on behalf of various industries, Pineau, who represents oil and tobacco interests, and DeChant, who has lobbied for telecommunications and natural gas companies. Jackson is one of 13 candidates competing for the Democratic nomination, with a debate scheduled for Thursday and a nominating convention set for July 25, where the party will select a nominee to challenge incumbent Senator Susan Collins in November.
