The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that Florida officials transfer Akbor Miah, a Bangladeshi immigrant charged with murdering his sister-in-law, into federal custody. Miah, who allegedly used the alias Shahidul Islam, was deported under the Trump administration in January 2019 but illegally reentered the U.S. and was released by the Biden administration in March 2022. DHS stated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against Miah, seeking his transfer after his state criminal proceedings conclude.
Miah first entered the U.S. in 2016 and was arrested by ICE in February 2018, leading to a final order of removal later that year. He is accused of murdering Monica Islam, who disappeared on May 2, 2025, after leaving a convenience store where they both worked. Her body was found later that day with evidence linking Miah to the crime, including DNA and a bullet found in his vehicle. Miah was arrested in New York and extradited to Florida, where he faces a first-degree murder charge, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. State Attorney Bill Gladson noted that investigators found suspicious internet searches conducted by Miah on the morning of the murder.
