Representative Pat Ryan (D-NY) has announced his intention to refund contributions received from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) following a change in his stance on U.S. aid to Israel. In a post on X, Ryan stated, "I expect groups like AIPAC will not support me in my future elections and frankly, I don’t want their support," criticizing the current Israeli government under Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Ryan was among 103 Democrats who recently voted to end all aid to Israel, a position he previously opposed. He confirmed his plan to return the funds in a reply to Track AIPAC on X, although he did not specify the total amount he would refund.
According to an analysis by the Washington Examiner of Federal Election Commission records, Ryan has received approximately $791,782 from AIPAC since 2022. This includes over $400,000 in direct contributions and more than $375,000 in individual contributions earmarked for him through AIPAC. During the 2024 election cycle, Ryan received over $479,000 from AIPAC while campaigning against Republican Alison Esposito.
Despite his past support for Israel, including backing resolutions affirming Israel's right to self-defense, Ryan's recent comments indicate a significant shift in his political stance. Track AIPAC welcomed his decision to reject AIPAC's endorsement and return its contributions, expressing hope that his commitment would extend to policy choices as well.
Ryan's GOP opponent, Jackie Auringer, criticized him for his decision, suggesting it was an attempt to appease the Democratic Socialists of America. The Washington Examiner has reached out to both AIPAC and Ryan's campaign for further comments.
