Rep. Al Green (D-TX) was censured in March 2025 for interrupting President Donald Trump during a joint address to Congress. Despite his reputation as a strong advocate for Democrats, Green lost a primary runoff against Rep. Christian Menefee (D-TX) on Tuesday night. Polling indicates that 58% of potential Democratic voters are dissatisfied with the party's response to Trump, according to a recent New York Times/Siena poll.
Green, 78, and Menefee, 38, faced off in Texas’s 18th Congressional District due to mid-decade redistricting by Texas Republicans. Menefee's campaign benefited from significant outside spending, including millions from the crypto industry, which contributed to Green's defeat as he sought a 12th term in Congress.
Democratic strategist Hyma Moore noted that Menefee represents a generational shift within the party, with voters expressing a desire for new leadership. Texas’s 18th District has seen the recent deaths of two Democratic officials, which has created a sense of urgency among constituents regarding their representation.
In a statement, Menefee acknowledged Green's contributions to Congress, highlighting his willingness to confront power directly. Following the election, Trump commented on Green's loss, expressing that he would miss Green's protests during his speeches. Green responded, stating he intends to continue his advocacy in Congress.
