Dr. Chrishelle Hemphill, a 48-year-old dentist in Texas, has been arrested after a 4-year-old girl, Aithana Rodríguez-Arriaga, died during a dental procedure. The incident occurred on April 1, and investigators allege that Hemphill's actions led to the child's death from a toxic dose of the opioid meperidine. Hemphill is charged with recklessly causing serious bodily injury to a child, a second-degree felony.
According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the investigation included interviews with witnesses, medical experts, and state dental investigators. Aithana's mother reported feeling rushed to sign paperwork before the procedure and was not allowed to stay with her daughter during the treatment. After the procedure, Aithana was found unresponsive, and emergency services were called.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accident caused by meperidine toxicity, noting that Aithana had 793 ng/mL of the drug in her system, a level considered toxic even for adults. Investigators found that while individual medications administered to Aithana were within recommended limits, Hemphill failed to account for their combined effects. Additionally, it was alleged that Hemphill did not recognize signs of respiratory distress and administered the wrong medication in response to the emergency.
The investigation revealed further concerns regarding the dental office's practices, including leftover medication intended for future patients and confusion over emergency protocols. Hemphill had no prior disciplinary actions against her dental license, which remains active. The Tarrant County District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing the case for prosecution.
