Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to increase traffic stops following confusion regarding their enforcement policies. During a press conference focused on election security, Mullin addressed questions about ICE operations after two officer-involved shootings of illegal immigrants occurred within a week. He emphasized that ICE has been empowered to perform its duties more effectively.
Mullin responded to inquiries about potential consequences for ICE officers who violate the Department of Homeland Security’s use-of-force policy, asserting that he enforces all laws without exception. He mentioned the need to reduce media attention on the agency while also ensuring compliance with the law.
Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis recently called for a reduction in heated rhetoric surrounding ICE, which she claimed is contributing to violence against federal officers. The remarks from Mullin come amid internal disagreements within the Department of Homeland Security regarding traffic stop policies, as President Donald Trump publicly supported the continuation of such stops, contradicting prior directives to avoid pursuing vehicles during arrests. Reports indicate that ICE detained over 10,000 individuals in late June, as the agency works to meet deportation quotas set by the White House.
