Washington, D.C. mayoral candidate Janeese Lewis George has proposed the establishment of safe injection sites in the district as a measure to address the opioid overdose crisis. Safe injection sites, also known as overdose prevention centers, are designated areas where individuals can use illegal drugs under professional supervision to reduce the risk of overdose.

Lewis George, who is currently a councilwoman and a leading candidate in the mayoral race, emphasized the need for such facilities in her public safety platform. She stated that opioid overdoses represent a significant public health crisis in the district.

In her campaign, Lewis George has received support from the Democratic Socialists of America and has focused on combining offender accountability with intervention and prevention strategies. She highlighted the importance of safe injection sites in a questionnaire from the Metro DC DSA, describing the opioid crisis as urgent.

Currently, there are three safe injection sites in the United States, located in Providence, Rhode Island, and New York City. These sites have been established in recent years, with the New York facilities opening in 2025. Lewis George has visited one of the New York centers and noted their potential benefits in reducing addiction and saving lives.

Despite the proposed benefits, safe injection sites have faced criticism from some community members and political figures. Critics argue that these facilities do not address the root causes of substance abuse and may lead to community concerns.

Lewis George first introduced the idea of safe injection sites in D.C. in 2023, requesting funding for two centers in the fiscal 2024 budget, although this proposal did not gain significant traction. In 2025, Washington, D.C. reported approximately 355 opioid overdose deaths, a decrease from 412 in 2024, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
