Earthquake in Peru's Andes region results in five fatalities and displaces hundreds

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near the city of Sicaya in central Peru on Saturday at approximately 9:20 p.m., resulting in at least five deaths and injuring over 20 individuals. The earthquake displaced around 300 residents as several buildings, including homes and a church, collapsed. Authorities are currently assessing the situation and searching for missing individuals. Luis Vásquez, head of the local civil defense office, noted that the use of traditional adobe construction in the area likely exacerbated the damage. Images from the affected community of Chongo Bajo depict families outside their damaged homes, while animals were also reported trapped under debris. Peru is located along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' an area known for its seismic activity.
