The Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood al Saadi, a 32-year-old dual Iraqi-Iranian national, for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks in the United States and coordinating nearly 20 attacks across Europe on behalf of Iranian-backed terrorist organizations. The indictment, unsealed on May 28, accuses Saadi of providing material support to terrorist groups, financing terrorism, and attempting acts of terrorism that transcend national boundaries.
Saadi was taken into custody while traveling abroad on May 1 and was transferred to FBI custody on May 14. He is now facing prosecution in the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors allege that he attempted to facilitate an attack against a synagogue in New York City in March and April 2026.
The indictment claims that Saadi was involved with Kataib Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, both designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. He is accused of planning and directing approximately 18 attacks in Europe through a group described as a front for these organizations.
Evidence presented in the indictment includes videos and communications linking Saadi to various attacks, including a claimed attack on the Israeli Embassy in London. Saadi allegedly admitted to being a leader within a network with ties to several militant groups and maintained close relationships with senior Iranian leaders, including the late Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani.
If convicted on the most serious charges, Saadi faces potential life sentences.
