The national average price for regular gas fell to $4.391 per gallon on May 29, 2026, a decrease of 16 cents over the past week, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). Gas prices have been declining since reaching a high of $4.564 per gallon on May 21. Prices dropped daily this week, starting at $4.507 per gallon on Memorial Day. Currently, nine states report average gas prices below $4 per gallon.
Gas prices have fluctuated significantly this year, ranging from a low of $2.79 per gallon in January to the recent high. Factors contributing to price changes include winter storms and geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving Iran. Reports suggest that an agreement to end hostilities may have influenced the recent price drop.
As of now, California has the highest gas prices at $6.059 per gallon, while Indiana has the lowest at $3.771 per gallon. Other states with high prices include Washington, Hawaii, Oregon, and Alaska, while Texas and Oklahoma follow Indiana for the lowest prices.
