Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) shared a philosophical message on social media following his loss to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Republican primary runoff. He referenced the fable of the scorpion and the frog, which tells the story of a scorpion that stings a frog while being carried across a river, explaining that it is in its nature to do so. Cornyn did not elaborate on the relevance of the fable to his situation.
Cornyn's defeat came after he had held his Senate seat for over two decades. His loss was attributed in part to a late endorsement of Paxton by former President Donald Trump. Cornyn faced criticism from the conservative wing of the Republican Party for his support of bipartisan gun legislation and his involvement in Senate negotiations on immigration and Ukraine aid.
Paxton's campaign successfully portrayed Cornyn as disconnected from the Trump-aligned faction of the party, leading to a significant loss of 28 percentage points in the primary. Trump stated that he supported Paxton because Cornyn had not backed him during challenging times, despite Cornyn eventually endorsing Trump for the 2024 presidential campaign.
Paxton, who will proceed to the general election, has faced legal challenges including impeachment by the Texas House in 2023 on charges of bribery and abuse of office, though he was acquitted by the state Senate. His victory indicates that many Republican voters may prioritize alignment with Trump over concerns about controversies surrounding Paxton.
Cornyn has not disclosed his future plans but shared a quote from Winston Churchill stating, “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
