House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is preparing for a series of legislative deadlines and votes when the House reconvenes next week. Johnson previously postponed several politically challenging issues, but these deadlines are now approaching, creating a challenging month ahead for House Republicans.
Key issues include expiring surveillance authorities, a potential reconciliation package, and several contentious votes. Congress recently left without approving funding for ICE and Border Patrol by the June 1 deadline set by former President Trump. House conservatives are expressing frustration with Senate Republicans and are expected to demand action upon their return.
Additionally, GOP leaders canceled a vote on a war powers resolution aimed at limiting Trump's military actions in Iran, as they did not have enough votes to defeat it. This vote is now scheduled for next week and is anticipated to pass with some GOP defections, marking Congress's first significant opposition to Trump's Iran policy.
Another vote on a discharge petition regarding Russia sanctions and aid to Ukraine is also expected to succeed. Johnson is facing challenges with a three-year extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which is set to expire on June 12. Conservatives are advocating for warrant requirements to be included, while the White House and GOP leadership favor a straightforward extension.
Some members are also interested in pursuing another reconciliation bill to address affordability issues before the midterms. Johnson has suggested the possibility of a third reconciliation bill to negotiate with his colleagues, but time is limited before the August recess, which many view as a practical deadline.
In addition, Johnson is losing a key adviser, as his chief of staff Hayden Hayes is set to depart from the speaker's office, according to reports.
