New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has endorsed Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic socialist, in her campaign against Adriano Espaillat, the current representative backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Avila Chevalier, 32, aims to unseat Espaillat, who has served in Congress since 2017 and is the first Dominican American elected to the House.
Mamdani announced his support for Avila Chevalier during an appearance on 'The Briefing with Jen Psaki,' emphasizing the need for new leadership that focuses on the struggles of the working class. He stated, "We could have exactly that in Congress" by electing Avila Chevalier to represent Uptown Manhattan and the Bronx.
Avila Chevalier has highlighted Espaillat's AIPAC endorsement in her campaign, linking it to her pro-Palestinian activism. Espaillat, who has a strong background in immigration reform, responded to Mamdani's endorsement by stating that he respects Mamdani's choice but believes that one endorsement does not determine the outcome of the race.
Espaillat has substantial support from various Democratic groups, including the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He expressed confidence in his approach to campaigning, stating, "I will continue doing what I have always done, listening to voters...". Notably, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has not endorsed any candidate in this race.
The endorsement from Mamdani may have implications for the Democratic Party, as Espaillat is closely aligned with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. The dynamics between Mamdani and Jeffries have been described as complicated, with Mamdani previously advising against a primary challenge to Jeffries.
