House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stated on NBC's 'Meet the Press' that he does not support the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), specifically on issues such as policing, immigration, and the Senate. Jeffries emphasized, "I do not support defunding the police. I do not support open borders. I do not support abolishing the Senate," and highlighted the Democratic agenda focused on lowering living costs and making housing and healthcare more affordable.
His remarks coincide with a growing influence of Democratic socialists in party primaries, prompting discussions among party leaders about the direction of the Democratic Party. Moderate Democrats are organizing against this influence, with Third Way President Jonathan Cowan announcing a $15 million campaign to counter democratic socialism through various strategies, including opposition research and social media campaigns.
Jeffries acknowledged that some DSA-aligned candidates may be elected in Democratic primaries, stating that they would be part of the House Democratic Caucus. He noted the caucus would include members from various ideological backgrounds. When asked about the potential for a vote to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Jeffries called for significant reform of the agency instead. He also clarified that he does not currently support Medicare for All, despite having co-sponsored related legislation in the past. Jeffries concluded by reiterating the Democratic focus on affordability as the party approaches the November midterms.
