NYPD officers shot and killed a man who allegedly charged at them with a butcher knife inside a Lower East Side apartment building on Sunday afternoon. Officers responded to the location around 4 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a domestic dispute and a person armed with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers discovered blood on the stairs inside the building.
As they followed the blood trail up the stairwell, officers encountered a man wielding a large butcher knife. According to the NYPD, officers ordered the man to show his hands and drop the weapon, but he continued to approach them. Officers first deployed a Taser, which was ineffective, and subsequently fired at least four shots, striking the man in the chest. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man was identified as 54-year-old Wei Chan, and the knife was recovered at the scene.
A second individual, 75-year-old Cheung Chan, was found inside the building with a head laceration, which authorities stated was inflicted by his son, Wei Chan. Cheung Chan is expected to survive, although it is unclear whether the injury was caused by the knife or another object. Four officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. A witness reported seeing CPR being performed on the man as he was carried out of the building. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
