The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Liberation Caucus has expressed opposition to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, citing her perceived distance from socialist principles. In a statement, the caucus condemned Ocasio-Cortez for her political actions, labeling her an 'opportunist' and criticizing her support for Israel's right to exist. They stated that she has failed to meet conditions regarding solidarity with Palestine.
The DSA's National Political Committee had previously withdrawn a conditional endorsement of Ocasio-Cortez, citing her participation in a public panel with the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and her support for Israel's defensive capabilities. The caucus also criticized her recent comments regarding the defund the police movement, suggesting that she has dismissed significant social movements as mere political phases.
The DSA Liberation Caucus, which identifies as a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist group, stated that Ocasio-Cortez's actions are inconsistent with socialist values and that they will not endorse her campaign for the presidency. Despite this, the New York City chapter of the DSA has historically supported Ocasio-Cortez, and there are indications of potential splits within the organization over these disagreements.
Ocasio-Cortez has not formally announced her candidacy for the presidential race, although she is currently polling as a leading choice among Democrats for the 2028 election. Both the DSA Liberation Caucus and Ocasio-Cortez’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
