The Trump administration has announced a new space policy that seeks to increase U.S. space traffic to nearly three launches or reentries per day by the year 2030. This initiative is intended to enhance the deployment of satellites that provide essential services such as GPS, weather forecasts, internet access, and military communications, particularly in response to China's advancements in space capabilities.
A policy directive released by the White House outlines plans for federal agencies to expand U.S. launch and reentry infrastructure, aiming for over 1,000 rocket launches and spacecraft returns annually by 2030. This will involve the development of additional launchpads, military ranges, airspace corridors, and regulatory systems, with an emphasis on collaboration with commercial companies.
In fiscal year 2024, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensed a record 148 commercial launches and reentries. The policy reflects the increasing reliance on satellite technology by businesses, households, and government agencies, highlighting the importance of rapid satellite deployment and replacement for service reliability.
The announcement comes amid China's own significant space expansion, which includes the launch of 67 intelligence and surveillance satellites in 2024, contributing to a total of over 500. The Pentagon has raised concerns regarding China's development of capabilities to disrupt U.S. satellite operations during potential conflicts.
The new policy also instructs NASA and the Transportation Department to identify obstacles to launching high-priority civilian or national-security payloads within 48 hours of need. This could facilitate the quick replacement of critical satellites in the event of a conflict. Additionally, the plan acknowledges potential disruptions from increased launch frequency and directs the Transportation Department to develop strategies for integrating launch operations with air traffic control systems.
While the policy does not allocate funding or guarantee the achievement of the 2030 target, it serves as a framework to address challenges such as limited launch ranges, crowded airspace, permitting delays, and insufficient reentry infrastructure.
