Democrats and Republicans are urging the House Ethics Committee to accelerate its investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct and domestic abuse as the midterm elections approach. Recent cases involving Representatives Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.), Cory Mills (R-Fla.), and Max Miller (R-Ohio) have drawn significant attention, prompting calls for a more efficient process.
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.), chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, stated that the lengthy nature of these investigations is a longstanding issue and emphasized the need for quicker resolutions. She, along with Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), is working on proposals to enhance the committee's responsiveness.
Gomez is currently under investigation for allegedly engaging in inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer, while Mills faces allegations of domestic abuse and campaign finance violations. Miller is also being investigated for accusations made by his ex-wife.
Cammack has called for the committee to act urgently, stating that if the allegations against Gomez are substantiated, he should resign. The investigations have raised concerns among lawmakers, particularly as some are seeking reelection amidst ongoing scrutiny.
The Ethics Committee is also looking into Mills, who has faced multiple allegations, including harassment and threats. The committee's investigations have been criticized for their duration, with some lawmakers expressing concern that the slow pace allows for a lack of accountability.
Previous cases have seen lawmakers resign while investigations were still pending, leading to calls for reform to ensure accountability within Congress. The committee's leadership has not yet commented on the current situation.
