British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the transfer of blueprints for Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine during his first visit to the country on August 24, 2026. This move comes as UK-Russia relations continue to deteriorate, with Burnham emphasizing the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine. He stated, "The friendship between our two countries will long outlast Russia’s illegal war," and assured that the UK would stand with Ukraine in both the conflict and future rebuilding efforts.
George Barros, director of innovation at the Institute for the Study of War, noted that the blueprints would enable Ukraine to enhance its long-range strike capabilities, particularly against fortified military targets. Previously, the UK had been supplying Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine, and this new development allows for domestic production of the missiles in Ukraine.
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Petrov criticized the UK's actions, stating that Britain is participating in the conflict and exacerbating tensions. He warned that the UK must reconsider its policies towards Russia to restore dialogue. The Russian embassy in the UK expressed concerns over the UK's involvement, suggesting that it would lead to consequences.
Despite the tensions, Barros indicated that while direct conventional strikes against the UK are unlikely, the UK should remain vigilant against potential clandestine threats, including cyber-attacks and sabotage.
The Storm Shadow missiles have a range of 350 miles and are designed to target fortified locations that cannot be effectively struck by drones. France and the UK plan to establish a production line for these missiles by the end of the year.
