Instagram has announced a new feature called 'First Draft' aimed at simplifying the editing process for Reels. The company revealed the feature on Tuesday in a post on Threads, stating that it automatically trims selected video clips and removes pauses, creating an initial cut in under 10 seconds. This feature is designed to save creators time and make video creation more accessible for those with limited editing experience. Users can access First Draft directly from Instagram’s camera while recording or from the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips.
While the feature is not unique, as similar automated editing tools exist in products like Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut, Instagram's integration of this functionality into its app aims to reduce the need for creators to transfer footage to separate editing software.
This year, Instagram has launched several tools for creators, including a 'Replace Audio' feature that allows users to change the music on existing posts without needing to delete and re-upload them. The company is also developing a new AI assistant for its video-editing app Edits and testing a 'Series' feature that enables creators to group related Reels for a more structured viewing experience.
The announcement of First Draft coincides with Instagram head Adam Mosseri's expected testimony in Meta’s ongoing social media addiction trial, where the company is accused of designing its platforms to encourage compulsive use among children. Meta has denied these allegations.
