Nancy Hogshead Initiates Petition for WNBA to Define Gender Eligibility

<p>Nancy Hogshead, a three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist, has launched a petition calling on the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) to explicitly restrict player eligibility to biological females. The petition, which was initiated on August 14, has garnered over 11,000 signatures.</p><p>Hogshead stated, "We’re calling for the WNBA to clarify that its eligibility rules are for women only. If you want to participate, you have to be a certain age, and you have to be a female." She aims for the petition to reach 100,000 signatures, citing widespread public support for the cause.</p><p>The WNBA's 2026 collective bargaining agreement specifies that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA," but it does not define "woman" or address gender identity or sex assigned at birth. The issue gained attention after former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White expressed intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while identifying as women, although league sources indicated that neither would be eligible, labeling their announcements as "publicity stunts."</p><p>Hogshead criticized the league's policies regarding gender self-identification, stating that the recent declarations highlight contradictions within those policies. The WNBA has responded by asserting that there are "no immediate eligibility matters" affecting the league and condemned efforts to use the debate to marginalize others. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert mentioned that discussions on the topic would continue with the players’ union and other stakeholders.</p><p>Hogshead's petition coincides with rallies supporting Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has publicly opposed transgender participation in women's sports. Hogshead expressed appreciation for Cunningham's stance, stating, "If anything, the more people see of Sophie Cunningham, the more they like her." Hogshead is also known for her advocacy work as a civil rights attorney and as the founder of Champion Women, an organization focused on women's and girls' rights in athletics.</p>
