China Issues Major Car Recall Affecting Tesla and Other Manufacturers Due to Door Handle Design

China has announced its largest car recall to date, affecting over four million vehicles, primarily Teslas, due to concerns over hidden door handles. These handles, popularized by Tesla, are now under scrutiny as new regulations require cars to have mechanical door releases inside and outside. Approximately 60% of the top 100 best-selling new energy vehicles in China utilize this design, which has been criticized for potentially complicating emergency exits. Car industry analyst Stephen Dyer noted that the minimalist design can be challenging to use, particularly in unfamiliar vehicles. Associate Professor Lyu Chen from Nanyang Technological University highlighted that the failure of electronically powered door handles can delay rescue efforts after accidents. The recall follows incidents involving Xiaomi's SU7 model, which faced scrutiny after fatal crashes in 2025 where occupants were reportedly trapped due to electrical failures. Xiaomi stated that its vehicles have mechanical emergency release handles. Tesla is also facing lawsuits in the US related to its door handle designs, including a case involving a Cybertruck that trapped passengers in a fire. In February, China announced a ban on hidden door handles, effective January 1, 2027, requiring new car designs to include physical release mechanisms. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) ordered Tesla and other manufacturers to recall vehicles and add warning labels to assist passengers in opening doors. Tesla's recall includes nearly three million cars, with concerns that the handles may be difficult to identify and could hinder escape during electrical failures. Experts have expressed that the new measures may not fully address safety concerns, emphasizing the need for reliable mechanical access in emergencies. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing the situation, while European regulators are also considering new standards for door handle safety. As global car designs often reflect regulations from major markets, it is anticipated that China's safety requirements may influence other regions.
