A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on August 25, 2026, indicates that the Democratic Party has gained an eight-point advantage over the Republican Party concerning cost-of-living issues, marking the largest gap since the question was first posed last October.</p><p>The poll surveyed 951 registered voters and found that 36 percent favored Democrats to address affordability, while 28 percent preferred Republicans. The remaining respondents either chose neither party or were uncertain.</p><p>This shift in voter sentiment coincides with rising prices, particularly in gasoline and oil, which have been affected by ongoing geopolitical tensions. As of August 2026, the average price of gasoline is reported at $4.10 per gallon, up from $2.98 in late February, according to AAA.</p><p>GOP strategist Christopher Nicholas commented on the situation, stating, "This is an easy layup for the party out of power, which are the Democrats." He noted that while efforts to keep prescription drug prices lower are beneficial, they may not be sufficient to address the broader healthcare cost issues that voters are facing.</p><p>The same poll revealed that Trump's approval rating has dropped to 33 percent, the lowest during his presidency. Additionally, support among hardline Republican voters has diminished, with the percentage of Republicans who strongly approve of Trump's performance decreasing from 43 percent in May to 35 percent in August.</p><p>The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these poll results. Spokesperson Davis Ingle previously stated that the ultimate measure of support would be reflected in the upcoming election on November 5, 2024, when Trump was elected by nearly 80 million Americans.</p>
