Trump Comments on CIA Director Ratcliffe's Trip to Moscow

President Trump stated on Wednesday that CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s recent trip to Moscow was not intended to warn President Vladimir Putin against testing NATO resolve or striking England. Ratcliffe's unannounced four-hour visit on Tuesday has led to various speculations regarding its purpose. In an interview with radio host Glenn Beck, Trump said, "Well, none of the above. He’s there, you know, on very sort of semi-routine — I hate to disappoint people." Trump suggested that Ratcliffe may have been discussing efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, asserting, "We would like to see the war with Ukraine end. That’s a war would have never started, Glenn." He added, "If I were president … you wouldn’t have had the war with Ukraine, and you wouldn’t have had 25 million people coming into our country like they did." Trump praised Ratcliffe, stating, "John Ratcliffe is a fantastic guy. He’s the head of the CIA, and he is not in there for any of the things that you said." Ratcliffe's visit marks the first known trip to Russia by a CIA director since William Burns visited in late 2021, prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Speculation surrounding Ratcliffe's visit has been fueled by the historical context of US-Russia relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, there were theories that Ratcliffe's trip could involve discussions about Operation Economic Outcast, which aims to disrupt Iran's economic ties with countries like China and Russia. Ratcliffe is known to be a close adviser to Trump and has been involved in matters related to Iran. Peace efforts regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict have primarily been managed by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, who previously met with Putin in January.
