A new round of 50% U.S. tariffs on certain Canadian goods took effect on Saturday, prompting Canada to respond with its own tariffs. Trump stated, "They take advantage of us as though they were a state, and they're not a state." He mentioned that a "good deal" with Canada fell apart shortly before the deadline, emphasizing that the U.S. can manage without Canadian goods. Additionally, Trump commented on Canada's claim that the U.S. imposed more conditions during the final hours of negotiations, suggesting that he does not deny the Canadian perspective. This contradicts statements from some of his administration members, including Vice President JD Vance, who blamed Canada for the negotiations' collapse. During the interview, Trump also referenced his recent suggestion to rename Lake Ontario as "Lake America," indicating he may not have been joking about the proposal.
