Trial Date Set for Accused 9/11 Plotters in 2028

<p>A military judge has scheduled a trial date for June 5, 2028, for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three other men accused of plotting the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The judge, Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Schrama, set this tentative date on Wednesday.</p><p>The trial date is set for nearly 20 years after Mohammed and his co-defendants were first arraigned in 2008 and 27 years after the attacks occurred.</p><hr /><ul><li>Plea agreements that would have spared Mohammed and two co-defendants from the death penalty were dismissed by a divided federal appeals court in July 2025. The Supreme Court is currently considering whether to review that decision.</li></ul><p>Mohammed is scheduled to stand trial alongside Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi.</p><ul><li>Military prosecutors had requested a trial date in January 2027; however, Judge Schrama ruled that this timeline was not feasible.</li></ul><p>Previously, a military judge had set a trial date for the alleged 9/11 plotters in 2021.</p>
