Defender Tayvon Gray has signed a contract extension with New York City FC, extending his tenure with the club through the 2028-29 season. The announcement was made on Wednesday and includes an option for the 2029-30 season. Gray is one of five players on the current roster who was part of the team when it won the MLS Cup in 2021.
In a statement, Gray expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue with NYCFC, stating, "I’m grateful and honored to continue my journey with New York City FC. This is my Club, and I’m proud of everything we’ve accomplished together, but I’m hungry for more. I want to keep winning, continue helping this group, and be part of this next chapter as we look ahead to Etihad Park."
Gray was in the final year of his previous contract this season. Sporting director Todd Dunivant mentioned earlier this month that discussions regarding a new contract were ongoing. Since joining NYCFC in 2019 at the age of 17, Gray has played in 178 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 13 assists.
During a World Cup event earlier this summer, Gray noted his aspirations to play in Europe but confirmed that he was in discussions with the club about his future. Currently, NYCFC is working to improve its position in the league standings as they aim to secure a playoff spot, with an important match scheduled against Toronto on Saturday.
