61-Year-Old Woman Killed by Car While Crossing Street in Queens

A 61-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in Queens on Wednesday. Wang Jing was crossing Union Turnpike near the intersection with Main Street in Kew Gardens Hills around 8 a.m. when she was hit by a 2010 Honda Civic, according to police. The Honda Civic, driven by a 56-year-old woman, was making a left turn onto Union Turnpike when it struck Jing, who was crossing outside the marked crosswalk, as reported by the NYPD. The impact caused major head trauma, and first responders transported Jing to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The driver remained at the scene and reported no injuries. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made. Jing is at least the fifth New Yorker to be killed by a car in the city since last week, which includes three cyclists and one pedestrian killed by hit-and-run drivers in separate incidents over five days. Council Speaker Julie Menin and Majority Leader Shaun Abreu issued a joint statement expressing condolences, stating, "The tragic loss of three cyclists and a pedestrian, all killed in unsolved hit-and-runs within a five-day span, is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with their families and communities as they grieve these preventable deaths."
