Mayor Mamdani Defends DSA Co-Chair Amid Rent Allegations

<p>New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not distance himself from Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), amid allegations that Gordillo failed to pay rent on a Crown Heights apartment while spending approximately $1.4 million on renovations for his townhouse. Critics have pointed out the contrast between Gordillo's actions and the anti-landlord, rent-abolitionist agenda he promotes.</p><p>Mamdani stated on Sunday that individuals working towards a "more affordable life" for New Yorkers should be welcomed. When asked if Gordillo should resign or if he condemned the allegations against him, Mamdani reiterated his support for those committed to making New York a more inclusive city, but did not directly address the allegations.</p><p>Gordillo is involved in a pending case in Brooklyn Housing Court, where a former landlord claims he owes $5,000 in rent for a $2,500-a-month apartment. Reports indicate that Gordillo's family purchased the townhouse in Bed-Stuy for $935,000 in 2019.</p><p>Rev. Kevin McCall, a Brooklyn pastor, criticized the DSA for demanding accountability from others while overlooking concerns regarding Gordillo. He stated that the allegations raise questions about Gordillo's transparency regarding his living situation and employment credentials, calling for public answers from DSA leaders.</p><p>Neither Mamdani's office, the NYC-DSA, nor Gordillo responded to requests for comment. The housing case remains unresolved, and no judgment has been made.</p><p>Questions about Gordillo’s credentials were also raised during a press exchange with Mamdani. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reported that Gordillo was terminated from his electrician apprenticeship due to prolonged absence and failure to participate in required work and classes.</p><p>Reports indicate that Gordillo later received approval for a $95,000 annual salary from NYC-DSA without disclosing his termination. Additionally, the renovation of the Bed-Stuy townhouse reportedly involved nonunion contractors and faced a city stop-work order over permit issues, raising further concerns about Gordillo's position as a union advocate.</p><p>A source close to the union mentioned that Gordillo had a weak work record and took the job primarily for appearances, potentially taking opportunities away from others in need.</p>
