<p>NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has proposed relocating data centers to Earth's orbit as a solution to the growing opposition against AI data centers on land. However, the concept of space-based data centers presents engineering challenges, such as managing the heat produced by AI chips, which would require large radiators for heat dissipation. Additionally, reliable and cost-effective launches, radiation-resistant hardware, and fast laser communication links would be necessary to connect numerous computers in orbit.</p><p>Despite these challenges, companies are exploring the feasibility of this concept. Google has initiated Project Suncatcher, aiming to place its TPU chips on solar-powered satellites connected by lasers, with plans to launch two prototype satellites by early 2027. SpaceX is pursuing a more ambitious project with its proposed AI1 satellite, which would be approximately 98 feet tall and have a wingspan of about 246 feet, capable of carrying up to 175 kilowatts of AI computing power. SpaceX is also constructing a factory in Texas to produce thousands of these satellites by late 2027.</p><p>Small-scale tests are already in progress, with startup Starcloud launching a satellite equipped with an Nvidia H100 chip in November. The company claims to have successfully run a version of Google’s Gemini model and trained a small language model in space. Starcloud plans to conduct its first commercial mission, Starcloud-2, in 2027. Additionally, SpaceX has requested permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy up to 1 million orbital data-center satellites, which would communicate using optical links and integrate with SpaceX’s Starlink network. The FCC has accepted the application for review but has yet to approve the satellite constellation.</p>
