Dame Jenni Murray died after being dazzled by headlights and colliding with two stationary vehicles, according to an inquest held today. The journalist and broadcaster, known for hosting Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4 for 33 years and writing for the Daily Mail, passed away in hospital a week after the incident at the age of 75.
The accident occurred on March 4, approximately one mile from Dame Jenni’s home in north London, while she was driving on Wildwood Road adjacent to Hampstead Heath. North London area coroner Tony Murphy recorded the conclusion of the inquest as a 'road traffic collision.'
Coroner Murphy read a statement from Dr. Clare Morkane, a hospital consultant who treated Dame Jenni, detailing that she had been driving when she became dazzled by vehicle lights and subsequently collided with two stationary vehicles around 7:44 PM. Following the collision, she was unable to recall the events but exited the vehicle independently and was taken to the hospital.
At the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, a CT scan revealed multiple fractures to her ribs and upper sternum, as well as a collapsed right lung. The next day, she experienced respiratory failure and was moved to intensive care, according to Dr. Morkane.
In accordance with Dame Jenni's wishes and after discussions with her family, it was decided not to attempt CPR or other invasive treatments if her condition worsened. This decision was agreed upon by all parties involved. Dame Jenni later developed bronchopneumonia, and her health continued to decline in the following days. On March 10, after further discussions with her family, the focus shifted to palliative treatment aimed at providing pain relief.
During the 20-minute hearing at Barnet Coroner’s Court, Mr. Murphy stated that Dame Jenni died peacefully at the Royal Free Hospital on March 12, 2026, at approximately 3:45 PM. The cause of death was recorded as bronchopneumonia resulting from the fractures sustained in the crash. An investigation by the Metropolitan Police concluded with no further action.
Dame Jenni’s death was formally recorded under her full name, Jennifer Susan Forgham-Bailey, who was born in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, on May 12, 1950. Her husband, David Forgham-Bailey, attended the inquest remotely via video link.
Dame Jenni was recognized as a significant advocate for women over her career, having navigated various women's issues and campaigns during her tenure on Woman's Hour. She was made a Dame Commander in 2011 for her contributions to broadcasting.
In 2006, she announced her breast cancer diagnosis on Woman’s Hour and became a vice-patron for Breast Cancer Now, raising awareness for nearly 20 years. More recently, she continued to write for the Daily Mail, addressing topics such as aging and personal experiences, including her driving experiences.
