North Fork High School Football Team Faces Challenges Amid Tourism Growth

The North Fork's varsity football team, the Porters, is facing challenges due to a decline in player enrollment and an influx of tourists in the area. The team practices at Greenport High School, where local support remains strong despite the difficulties. Porters lineman Emmett Tramontana expressed the excitement of having community backing, stating, "It’s electric. … To look up into the stands, we can pack them out. It’s a great feeling, having everybody supporting you. It’s like nothing else." Coach Brian Olshefsky noted that the local community's pride in athletics is evident, especially during football season, which provides a sense of unity among residents. The team, which combines players from the three small school districts of Mattituck, Southold, and Greenport, has faced challenges with player numbers, having struggled to field a varsity team in 2025. The coach mentioned that enrollments have declined over the past decade, leading to creative solutions such as having soccer players fill in roles on the football team. The Porters aim to build interest in football at a young age, as there is no local youth league. Other small programs in Suffolk County are also facing similar challenges, with some schools reducing their football programs. The Porters are focused on creating a positive experience for the community and reviving the football program's legacy, which was strong in the 1950s and 1960s.
