Sean McVay's Actions Suggest Backup QB Decision for Rams

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has not officially confirmed the team's backup quarterback for the 2026 season, but his recent decisions indicate a direction. Rookie Ty Simpson started against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Rams' preseason finale at SoFi Stadium, while Stetson Bennett IV did not participate. This choice suggests that Bennett may have secured the backup position behind reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford. McVay is known for carefully managing player participation in preseason games. Bennett had previously demonstrated his capabilities by leading four scoring drives and rushing for two touchdowns in a 34-0 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Simpson entered the game having completed 29 of 37 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns during the preseason, including a notable 21-of-25 performance against Kansas City. Bennett's preseason statistics show he completed 23 of 37 passes for 219 yards and also scored two rushing touchdowns. Simpson's starting role allowed undrafted rookie Matthew Caldwell to take the field, who previously played at Texas and had a college career total of 3,135 yards and 22 touchdowns across 32 games. Caldwell signed with the Rams after going undrafted in April and may serve as a developmental option on the practice squad. Although McVay has not publicly announced the quarterback depth chart, his choices in player participation may indicate his preferences.
