Clean-up of Illegal Waste Dump in Oxfordshire Costs £6 Million

Teams have completed a five-month clean-up operation of an illegal waste dump near the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire. The 150-metre-long trail of waste was deposited in a field by the A34 in Kidlington last year, prompting a criminal investigation. The Environment Agency (EA) declared it a critical incident in November 2025. The EA coordinated the clean-up operation, with contractors removing 15 to 30 lorry loads of rubbish each day starting in April. Over the five-month period, teams from Acumen Waste Service removed an estimated 22,704 tonnes of rubbish, at an estimated cost of £6 million. The waste included tyres, shredded plastic, and household waste from an area of approximately 8,000 square metres, which is larger than Wembley Stadium. Concrete blocks have been placed at the entrance, and the main gate has been securely padlocked to prevent access to the site. This operation is part of a wider Government crackdown on illegal waste dumping following a rise in organized waste crime across the country. Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle stated that communities deserve to be free from illegal waste dumping and emphasized the Government's commitment to tackling the issue. The EA shut down the Kidlington site in October 2025, and a decision was made on December 11 to clear the rubbish due to the risk of fire and potential pollution to the River Cherwell. Water quality sampling at the site found no significant impact on the local environment. The EA's criminal investigation has led to the arrest of four individuals. Philip Duffy, chief executive of the EA, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the clean-up and highlighted ongoing efforts to address waste crime. The EA funded the £6 million operation and plans to pursue those responsible for the costs as the investigation continues. The Government has also committed to cleaning five other illegal waste sites across the country.
