Norway’s King Harald, who served as the ceremonial head of state since 1991, died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89, according to the royal palace. King Harald was Europe’s oldest living monarch and had been hospitalized since August 17 for treatment of a bacterial infection in his blood.
In 2024, King Harald was hospitalized while on holiday in Malaysia due to an infection and received a temporary pacemaker. He was later flown back to Norway and fitted with a permanent device. During his reign, he announced a reduction in his official engagements but ruled out abdication, affirming his commitment to his role as king for life.
His death occurs amid challenges for the Norwegian royal family, including scrutiny of Crown Princess Mette-Marit due to her past friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, for which she has expressed regret. Additionally, her son Marius Hoiby was convicted in June of multiple counts of rape and domestic violence, receiving a four-year prison sentence, which both he and the prosecution are appealing.
