Pat McAfee's role at ESPN has reportedly increased, leading to speculation about his involvement in a significant change within the production team of 'College GameDay.' Veteran producer Jim Gaiero has been removed from his position after 10 years, as reported by Awful Announcing. ESPN vice president of production Matthew Garrett is expected to take over as executive producer for the show, which will air its first broadcast on September 5 in Baton Rouge for the LSU vs. Clemson game.
Sources indicate that tensions between Gaiero and McAfee may have contributed to this change. Last October, McAfee expressed frustration with critics during an Instagram Story, suggesting that older ESPN executives were among his detractors. He stated, "If you think about old white people and old ESPN people, those are really the people that hate me the most at this stage of life." While he did not name anyone specifically, sources suggest his comments were aimed at Gaiero and Garrett.
With Gaiero's departure, ESPN has stated that he will focus on his responsibilities for Super Bowl 2027 and assist with golf coverage, including plans to become the lead producer for The Masters and PGA Championship in 2028. The network also mentioned that Gaiero's decision was influenced by a desire for a better work-life balance due to his middle-school-aged daughter.
However, some sources have raised concerns about the timing of Gaiero's exit, suggesting it could have been delayed until after the start of the season. Additionally, reports indicate that Alabama coach and co-host Nick Saban is dissatisfied with the change, further complicating the situation.
Gaiero has been with ESPN since 1995 and has produced various college sports and Indy Car Series events, earning at least seven Sports Emmys. Garrett, who oversees ESPN's college football studio shows, was promoted to his current role in 2025.
