Lake formed by ice-rock avalanche on Nepal-China border overflows

The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu has reported that the risk from an ice-rock avalanche on the Nepal-China border persists as officials from both countries continue to monitor the situation. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy indicated that the avalanche occurred in a tributary on the Nepali side of the upper reaches of the China-Nepal boundary river, blocking the river and resulting in the formation of a landslide-dammed lake. The lake is currently at a high water level and has begun to overflow, with warnings issued regarding the risk of a breach. The spokesperson stated, "The situation is currently at a critical stage for rescue and emergency response in both Nepal and China." Previously, it was reported that a significant barrier lake formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers has breached. The embassy has advised communities and individuals downstream of the lake to closely monitor changes in river levels, remain vigilant, and prepare for potential emergencies. Relevant authorities in both Nepal and China are actively monitoring the situation and assessing risks. The embassy did not disclose details regarding the size of the lake or its water volume, nor did it specify when a potential breach might occur. This warning coincides with ongoing severe flooding and landslides affecting several districts in Nepal, including Rasuwa.
