New York Governor Hochul Faces Legal Challenges Over ICE Cooperation Law

<p>New York Governor Kathy Hochul is facing legal and political challenges regarding a law that restricts local law enforcement cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican gubernatorial opponent, criticized the law, stating it was "written in the blood" of crime victims and warned that it would lead to more harm for New Yorkers, citing recent incidents involving illegal immigrants.</p><p>Blakeman stated, "I want to be very clear about this law: This law is written in the blood of the victims, past, present and future," and described it as misguided, claiming it would make communities less safe. A spokesperson for Hochul stated that the law does not hinder local police from apprehending dangerous criminals and that local law enforcement can still collaborate with federal authorities on criminal investigations.</p><p>Hochul has indicated plans to involve Attorney General Letitia James in enforcing compliance with the law, while also addressing concerns about police actions in sensitive locations like churches and schools. Blakeman remarked on the law's implications for public safety, referencing a recent homicide attributed to an illegal immigrant and citing local incidents of crime involving illegal immigrants.</p><p>Blakeman has expressed a desire to find ways to circumvent the law, emphasizing his commitment to law and order. He noted recent law enforcement successes in his county, including the seizure of illegal firearms and drugs, which he argues were aided by ICE involvement.
