Woman Denied Surgery After Bowel Cancer Diagnosis

Vicky Mcloughlin, 66, was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer in November 2024 after experiencing difficulties with bowel movements for two weeks. Her daughter, Chloe, noticed changes in Vicky's health, leading to an endoscopy that did not initially reveal any issues. After further examination in A&E, a mass was detected, and a biopsy confirmed cancer that had spread from the bowels to the cervical area. The tumor's progression resulted in complications, including a hole in her bowel and cervical area, necessitating a stoma bag and kidney drainage tubes. Vicky was denied chemotherapy due to recurrent infections and instead underwent two rounds of radiotherapy. Despite Chloe's appeals to doctors at Solihull Hospital and St Mark’s Hospital in London for surgical intervention, both hospitals declined, citing risks associated with the surgery, including potential loss of a leg and concerns about Vicky's overall fitness. In a letter, doctors expressed significant concerns about the surgery's impact on her quality of life. Chloe disagrees with this assessment, stating that Vicky's quality of life is already severely affected by frequent hospital visits. Vicky has had multiple health complications, including sepsis, and her condition limits further treatment options. A spokesperson for University Hospitals Birmingham expressed sympathy for Vicky and her family, noting that decisions regarding radical cancer surgery are complex and based on careful risk assessments. A representative from London North West University Healthcare trust stated they could not comment on individual cases.
